Food
Most medieval people had to make their own food. Food carts could be found in the center of towns but peasants lived in manor villages and didn’t have access to these. The typical meal almost always had bread made of rye and barley. Peasants had to pay the nobles to use their ovens to cook their bread. They also ate a great deal of pottage. Peasants relied on pigs for their regular source of meat.
Peasants also ate mutton, which comes from sheep. Animals such as deer, boar, hares, and rabbit lived in the forests surrounding the manors. The lords might let the peasants got to the river and catch dace, grayling, and gudgeon. They usually had water or milk to drink while the nobles generally drank wine or ale.
